HC006 – Electrical Devices & System Components
Hydrocarbons are potentially flammable refrigerants and combustion can occur when mixed with air at a ratio of between 2% (LFL) and 10% (UFL) and a source of ignition above 460oC is applied.
R1270 has a Lower Flammability Level (LFL) of 2% which is equivalent to a concentration of approximately 40g/m3. (0.040Kg/m3).
Common Sources of Ignition.
- Electromechanical Controllers
- Flames (Brazing Torches, cigarette lighters, matches, etc)
- Light Switches
- Contactors
- Thermostats /Timers
- Standard compressor relays / Klixons
- Pressure switches
- Lighting ballasts/starters
- Standard leak detectors
- Fan motors and pumps
- Anything that may cause a spark

To ensure safe operation of the systems, these electrical devices should be replaced with like-for-like, manufacturer-approved components only.
HC system product labels must include the refrigerant type and charge amount
Compressor manufacturers produce specific Hydrocarbon-based models as their associated electrical devices are different.
Compressors/Systems MUST be labeled with a yellow triangle with flame (Symbol ISO 7010 W021 warning, flammable material).

Other Hazards include
- Liquid Refrigerant Freeze Burns – ensure adequate PPE is utilised, gloves, goggles, etc.
- Asphyxiation – care is needed as HC’s are odourless and heavier than air
